Google is putting 1 million books from Princeton University's ...

Google Inc., the most-used Internet search engine, will scan books from Princeton University's libraries as part of its project to make electronic versions of books available online. Princeton will add about 1 million titles to the archive, Mountain View, Calif.-based Google said today in a statement. The school is only providing public-domain works, not copyrighted material. Princeton, founded in New Jersey in 1746, is the twelfth library to make its collections available online through Google, following universities such as Harvard, Stanford and Oxford. The Google project, started in 2004, has attracted lawsuits from publishers and authors who object to the company scanning copyrighted material. Google co-founder Larry Page said last month that material from books is starting to appear in more search results on Google's main search engine.

ONLINE UPDATE: College student jailed for 2 days after reporting ...

TAMPA, Fla. — A woman who told police she had been raped was jailed for two days after officers found an old warrant accusing her of failing to pay restitution for a 2003 theft arrest. While she was behind bars, according to the college student's attorney, a jail worker refused to give her a second dose of the morning-after contraceptive pill because of the worker's religious convictions. The 21-year-old woman was released Monday only after attorney Vic Moore reported her plight to the local media. "Shocked. Stunned. Outraged. I don't have words to describe it," Moore said. "She is not a victim of any one person. She is a victim of the system. There's just got to be some humanity involved when it's a victim of rape." Moore said the woman was not allowed to take the second emergency contraceptive pill until Monday afternoon, a day late, after reporters called police and jail officials.

World-Renowned Criminal Profiler Speaks at Colorado Technical ...

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Colorado Technical University Online's (Colorado Tech Online) Criminal Justice Club recently welcomed Pat Brown, internationally renowned criminal profiler, for an insightful Webcast discussion on criminal profiling, law enforcement, and other criminal justice matters. "Profiling is not a matter of describing the general characteristics of a serial killer," Brown told many students, faculty, and alumni who participated in the Webcast. "Real profiling is a thorough analysis of physical and behavioral evidence at the crime scene, which enables the profiler to develop specifics related to one particular case or set of cases. Students who learn these analytical skills can then go on to use them as detectives, psychologists, researchers, and in any other field requiring logic and a search for the truth." Pat Brown's career as a profiler began when she suspected a young man who was renting a room from her was involved in a local homicide.

On-online dangers for college students

A senior Ashburton educator has warned parents to be aware of the risks attached to their children putting personal details online. Ashburton College deputy principal Chris Buckland said in his opinion many adults were unaware of what children were doing online. An unsecure social networking website has over 400 Ashburton College students listed as members, many exposing their personal details to the world and identifying themselves as part of groups including losers and those who hate Ashburton College. Bebo is an online blogging community, similar to MySpace. Developed to enable friends to communicate, users create their own profile page with the option of making personal details available to everybody. Anyone can join up, posing as whoever they wish. Concerns have been raised about the risk of imposters collecting personal details and photographs of children and teenagers.

University Hospitals pricing available online

University Hospitals is participating in a new online database called Iowa Hospital Association PricePoint, which lists health care costs at clinics around the state. Launched this month, data is collected through audit reports for the American Hospital Association annual survey in hopes of creating price transparency for patients. This is every diagnosis. As you can imagine, that is a huge number, University Hospital Director and CEO Donna Katen-Bahensky said Wednesday during a meeting of the Iowa state Board of Regents hospital oversight committee. Davenport Regent Amir Arbisser questioned the usefulness of the dense database to the general public. Maybe (we could) come up with a list of baseline procedures, Arbisser said. In other hospital news: • University Hospitals officials say expected state appropriations will leave the IowaCare program $9 million short.
