Google Inc., the most-used Internet search engine, will scan books from Princeton University's libraries as part of its project to make electronic versions of books available online. Princeton will add about 1 million titles to the archive, Mountain View, Calif.-based Google said today in a statement. The school is only providing public-domain works, not copyrighted material. Princeton, founded in New Jersey in 1746, is the twelfth library to make its collections available online through Google, following universities such as Harvard, Stanford and Oxford. The Google project, started in 2004, has attracted lawsuits from publishers and authors who object to the company scanning copyrighted material. Google co-founder Larry Page said last month that material from books is starting to appear in more search results on Google's main search engine.

The 21-year-old woman was released Monday only after attorney Vic Moore reported her plight to the local media. "Shocked. Stunned. Outraged. I don't have words to describe it," Moore said. "She is not a victim of any one person. She is a victim of the system. There's just got to be some humanity involved when it's a victim of rape." Moore said the woman was not allowed to take the second emergency contraceptive pill until Monday afternoon, a day late, after reporters called police and jail officials.

The University of California has agreed to send grading information from professors at each of its campuses to Pick-a-Prof, an online forum for students that has filed a public records request for the information. The request — which amounts to several thousand of records statewide — is the first of its kind for the system, said UC Counsel Christopher Patti. But UC isn't alone. For Bernie Walp, there's no such thing as a quick zip over to the local community college after work for a fun class, not when he's working a night shift 4,200 feet up a mountain.
Walp, 53, operates telescopes at Lick Observatory atop Mount Hamilton, south of San Jose. But his odd schedule and lofty lifestyle -- he lives on the mountain as well -- did not stop him from taking a meteorology course at Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill last year.
